Business Models: Major Research Directions and Search of Conceptual Foundations
Abstract
Business models continue evolving as an issue of pressing topicality in contemporary management research. The interest towards this problem is mainly driven by the unquestionable need of business to understand its operations from the point of mechanisms which are used to create and offer value to the customer and also to get the revenue from this activity. The essence of business model is closely related to inter-firm interaction as value is jointly created by multiple market actors. Regardless the fact that most of authors study business model as a separate unit of analysis the question about its unified theoretical foundations still remains not answered. The current paper is generalizing the existing research related to business models, defining the conceptual core stones of this issue, its structure and relationship to company strategy, as well as highlighting and structuring the key directions of business models research in purpose of identification of major trends and further research areas. As a result of this research we offer a conceptual model which facilitates and structures the process of data collection for further business models analysis.
