Unionisation: A Feasibility Study for the Indian Software Industry
Abstract
Unionisation, especially in developing countries, ensures benefits from economic growth for the working population. However, there is a growing tendency towards unionisation avoidance in the service sector, including software. In the face of the distinct characteristics of software professionals, the flexible work environment and creative and innovative work practices this industry has to offer, traditional labor laws find applicability difficult in this industry. This paper explores the feasibility of unionisation of the Indian software industry, with a real life survey, in the backdrop of downsizing of companies during the stages of shakeout and maturity of the industry. It suggests the formation of a cyber union that would take care of the unique nature of knowledge work and workers.
