Purpose: to estimate the influence of CEO personal characteristics on the level of digitalization of SMEs.
Methodology: upper echelon theory is used to justify the study’s hypotheses, which are tested on a sample of 273 Russian SMEs. Poisson regression was used as the primary method of data analysis, alongside several additional models for robustness checks, specifically models with differently constructed dependent variables and models with different sets of controls.
Findings: the education level of CEO has a positive impact on the level of digitalization of SMEs, while age has a negative effect.
Originality and contribution: upper echelon theory is implemented in order to make strategic decisions regarding the digitalization of SMEs. The study is the first to analyze the effects of the individual characteristics of CEOs on the digitalization of Russian SMEs.
